Ακούμε συχνά ότι η περιοχή της Όχης έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως NATURA 2000. Τι σημαίνει όμως στην πράξη αυτό; Τις πληροφορίες τις αντλούμε κατευθείαν από την πηγή τους και το natura2000.eea.europa.eu.
Είναι απορίας άξιο όταν ο χαρακτηρισμός μιας περιοχής ως NATURA 2000 σημαίνει ορισμένες συγκεκριμένες προδιαγραφές και προϋποθέσεις για την ασφάλειά του, πως τελικά αδειοδοτούνται αιολικά πάρκα;
Διαβάζοντας κανείς τις παρακάτω πληροφορίες θα εκπλαγεί με την σπανιότητα της τοποθεσίας και όσα μυστικά κρύβει.

Other Site Characteristics
The site is located in the southern part of the island of Evvoia. It contains two distinct areas: The "Kampos Karystou" plain and the mountain Ochi with the coastal areas of Cape Kafirefs and Potami. Kampos Karystou is a coastal plain lying west of Karystos, with extensive cultivated fields, small freshwater lakes,intermittently flowing streams and freshwater marshes, which are characterized by the presence of the plant species Typha latifolia, Salix sp. and Phragmites australis (a habitat type not included in Annex I, described in Corine 91 by code 53.2). Ochi mountain (1398 m) is located NE of Karystos. The most remarkable characteristics of this part of the site are: the extensive area with phrygana and sclerophyllus shrubs (especially Quercus coccifera), the many green valleys with Platanus orientalis, the small chestnut forest near the highest peak, and the rivers in which the dominant species are Vitex agnus-castus and Nerium oleander. The marine area of the site is characterized by the existence of posidonia beds, mainly in deep waters (>20 m) and by reefs (along Cape Kafirefs). Both of these ecosystems are in excellent condition. NOTES 1. In Kampos Karystou area there are extensive crops, not described by any habitat type of Annex I. 2. Habitat type 9320 describes areas with Olea europaea and Pistacia lentiscus shrubs. 3. On Ochi mountains there are extensive patches of Pteridium aquilinum. 4. There are Erica manipuliflora heathlands, a habitat type not included in Annex I.

4.2 Quality and importance
The ecological quality and importance of the site result from the following elements:1) The variety of
habitat types which it contains with interesting fauna and flora communities. 2) The great number of
passage birds and raptors which have been recorded in the area. 3) Its rich herpetofauna. 4) Well
conserved acquatic ecosystems such as posidonia beds in deep waters and reefs at the coastline of Cape Kafirefs. 5) Dimosari gorge was proposed to be designated as an aesthetic forest in 1986.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION D:The species Erinaceus concolor (mammal) and Bufo bufo(amphibian) and Malpolon monspessulanus (reptile) are protected by the greek Presidential Decree 67/81.The following endemic plants are included in the IUCN catalogue for the rare and threatened species of Greece: Inula subfloccosa (Rare), Paeonia mascula ssp. hellenica (Indeterminate), Cerastium runemarkii (Indeterminate), Verbascum delphicum (Rare), and Stachys euboica (Rare). The species Sideritis euboea, Viola euboea, Armeria johnsenii and the subspecies Campanula celsii ssp. carystea are endemic to the island of Evoia.Anthemis cretica ssp. cretica is a Balkan endemic (it currently includes the species A. panachaica and A. meteorica which are included in the IUCN list of threatened plants as rare and are protected by the Greek Law -Presidential decree 67/81).
Ζούμε δίπλα σε ένα χρυσορυχείο της Φύσης το οποίο κινδυνεύει να καταστραφεί για πάντα για μια "επένδυση" 20ετιας, όταν μπορούμε να προστατεύσουμε το φυσικό περιβάλλον και να σχεδιάσουμε μια άλλη στρατηγική ανάπτυξης που θα απογειώσει την Κάρυστο σε διεθνές επίπεδο καθ'όλη τη διάρκεια του έτους με επίκεντρο το σπάνιο φυσικό πλούτο, θα δώσει δουλειές στα παιδιά της, απασχόληση στους επαγγελματίες και δίχως ξένους πρόσκαιρους αφέντες στον τόπο μας.
Ας διαβάσει κανείς όλα αυτά τα δώρα που έδωσε ο Θεός στο βουνό μας κι ας αναρωτηθεί αν πρέπει την κυριότερη στιγμή να μείνει αμέτοχος θεατής των εξελίξεων.
Κανείς δεν μπορεί να σώσει την Οχη, εκτός από την ίδια την ΚΑΡΥΣΤΟ.
